After years of teaching in person and on the internet, those just starting to paint with watercolours need to look out for these THREE mistakes.
Painting with watercolour paints is GREAT fun and exciting. But like most things you need to know what you are working with.
ONE : Understand that watercolours are translucent. So it's all about layers. Getting the right amount of water and paint can be a stumbling block. Beginners expect the colour on the paper to look the same as in the box. So you need to practice with different amounts of water and paint and make a chart.

TWO : When the paints dry they can leave a hard edge which you may not want. All you have to do is dampen your brush and slightly agitate the paint until it goes where you want it to.
THREE: Remember that mixing too many colours together could result in a muddy mess. It is always best to make some colour charts. Some colours are more intense than others, and they all mix differently. I have a number of colour-mixing videos on my channel. Here is an example.
